As a member of Climate Alliance Bad Hersfeld commits itself to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 10 % every 5 years. A central aspect to achieve this goal is to transform its energy supply within the next decades. Energy savings and higher energy efficiency standards shall contribute to lower the overall energy demand. The remaining demand shall be met by renewable energy so that Bad Hersfeld will be supplied with 100% renewables by 2050.

A central feature of Bad Hersfeld’s energy strategy is its diversity in terms of renewable technologies. Located in the center of Germany the community does not build on just one energy source as some do which are located in areas with very good conditions for wind or solar. Instead, Bad Hersfeld promotes the installation of photovoltaics, wind power plants as well as biomass to meet its electricity demand. In case of heat demand the community wants to reach a 100% renewable supply by biogas, solar thermal energy and small and decentralised combined heat and power units.
